MR. BOXHALL: I went around the decks and was clearing the lifeboats; helping take the covers off. SENATOR SMITH: Covers off? MR. BOXHALL: Covers off of the boats, and clearing them generally. SENATOR SMITH: Were they all covered? MR. BOXHALL: Yes, sir; except the sea boats; and assisting generally around the decks. Then I went into the chart room and worked out the ship's position. I was clearing boats for a little while, and then went in and worked the position out. SENATOR SMITH: Did you report her position? MR. BOXHALL: I submitted her position to the captain. SENATOR SMITH: What did he say? MR. BOXHALL: He said, "Take it to the Marconi room." SENATOR SMITH: Did you do so? MR. BOXHALL: Yes, sir. SENATOR SMITH: Did you find the operator in charge? MR. BOXHALL: I found the two operators there. SENATOR SMITH: Who? MR. BOXHALL: Phillips and Bride. SENATOR SMITH: What did you do with your information? MR. BOXHALL: There was too much noise of the steam escaping, so I wrote the position down for them and left it. SENATOR SMITH: You simply wrote the position down? MR. BOXHALL: Yes. SENATOR SMITH: And handed it to the operator? MR. BOXHALL: Lett it on his table there. He saw it. He made a call, and he was listening, and I did not interrupt him. SENATOR SMITH: Did you remain to see what disposition was made of it? MR. BOXHALL: No. SENATOR SMITH: Did you keep a copy of that, or do you know exactly what that showed? MR. BOXHALL: That position? SENATOR SMITH: Yes. MR. BOXHALL: Yes; I have the position. SENATOR SMITH: Have you a memorandum of it? MR. BOXHALL: No; I have it in my head. SENATOR SMITH: Give it to the reporter. |
M. BOXHALL : Je faisais le tour des ponts et je préparais les embarcations de sauvetage; j’aidais à enlever les bâches de protection. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Des bâches de protection? M. BOXHALL : Les bâches de protection des canots, et le nettoyage général. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Étaient-ils tous couverts? M. BOXHALL : Oui, monsieur; sauf les canots de mer; et l’aide générale autour des ponts. Puis je suis allé dans la salle des cartes et j’ai calculé la position du navire. Je faisais le nettoyage des canots pendant un certain temps, puis je suis allé travailler pour déterminer la position. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous fait état de sa position? M. BOXHALL : J’ai soumis sa position au capitaine. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qu’a-t-il dit? M. BOXHALL : Il a dit : «Amenez-la à la salle Marconi.» LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : L’avez-vous fait? M. BOXHALL : Oui, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous trouvé le responsable? M. BOXHALL : J’ai trouvé les deux responsables. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qui? M. BOXHALL : Phillips et Bride. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qu’avez-vous fait de vos renseignements? M. BOXHALL : Il y avait trop de bruit de vapeur qui s’échappait, alors j’ai noté la position pour eux et je l’ai laissée. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous avez simplement noté la position? M. BOXHALL : Oui. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Et vous l’avez remise à l’opérateur? M. BOXHALL : Je l’ai laiissée sur sa table. Il l’a vu. Il a téléphoné, il écoutait, et je ne l’ai pas interrompu. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Êtes-vous resté pour voir quelle décision a été prise à ce sujet? M. BOXHALL : Non. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : En avez-vous gardé une copie ou saviez-vous exactement son contenu? M. BOXHALL : Cette position? LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Oui. M. BOXHALL : Oui, j’ai la position. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous une note écrite? M. BOXHALL : Non, je l’ai en mémoire. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Donnez-la au journaliste. |
